The Vatican Shield – Vatican Shield – Aspis hoplite shield is the most accurate reproduction ever made by Res Bellica.
We based the wooden part of our aspis directly on the extremely rare hoplite/Etruscan shield preserved in the Vatican Museums: this model precisely reconstructs the internal wooden structure, an element rarely found in ancient artifacts.

The exterior is covered in rawhide, one of the historically proven methods for shield protection and durability. The edge, made of embossed bronze and decorated with a braided motif, faithfully reproduces Greek, Etruscan, and Magna Graecia models, documented by numerous archaeological specimens.
The interior features a painted and glued fabric lining, while the complex porpax (the central arm band) is composed of a metal structure that secures a leather-covered wooden core. This makes the shield simultaneously rigid, lightweight, and comfortable.
Our shield also offers two major advantages. The central shoulder harness is positioned asymmetrically, making it lightweight to use.
Above all, our aspis is extremely light, weighing only 5.8 kg.
The Vatican Shield is delivered ready for use. It is complete with all metal parts, only the grip cord and the external painted decoration are missing. As for the latter, please note that you can request a customized one, made especially for you.
