In this brief presentation we try to transform Livy’s passage (VIII, 9) into an image: ” he then girded himself with the Gabinian cincture, and vaulting, armed, upon his horse, plunged into the thick of the enemy,”, in which he describes the consul in the act of launching himself into a suicide attack against the enemy ranks, in the execution of the rite of devotio.

This is an appendix to the original Italian version of the article ‘Consular suicide – The practicalities of devotio’, published in Ancient Warfare IV-5 (https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/issue-iv-5-pdf.html). This appendix was, in the end, not included into the article.
Now revised and updated, we offer this appendix as a gift for our customers.
