Spangenhelm type Baldenheim, 6th-7th century AD.
Spangenhelm type Baldenheim (from the place of the first archaeological find) appears towards the end of the 5th century.
Helmets belonging to this typology are richly decorated, widespread both in the Eastern Roman Empire and the Barbaricum.
The vast majority of these helmets were produced in Imperial workshops, and then decorated by Roman specialized craftsmen (barbaricarii).
We added a rich decorative horsehair tuft on the top of the helmet, dyed in red. Red was the favourite colour of warriors, and the horsehair tuft is well attested both in visual and archaeological sources (in which it’s called iuba equina).
Brass elements and leather parts and lacing are entirely handmade by Res Bellica.
Hand dyed horsehair.
We can make the spangenhelm that you like the most, by choosing among the available models from the archaeological sources.
Price for brass or bronze parts, iron segments, geometric and vegetal decorations.
For more complex models, decorated segments and possible gilding, send a message to info@res-bellica.com for a personalized quote.
