Roman cavalry helmet with silvered mask, 1st – 2nd century CE.
Replica of one of the five cavalry masked helmets from Nijmegen (ancient Noviomagus), on the Rhine limes.
Cavalry helmet type D (Robinson classification), or type I (Negin-D’Amato). In fact, it features a horizontal hinge on the upper part of the mask, which connects it to the skull, very low, almost on the eyebrows. Also, the mask sports male features and it’s completely unadorned.
This type of helmets are usually known as “cavalry sports helmets”. They were surely used in the feats of the hyppika gymnasia.
Some of the masks are made out of thick metal: almost surely, these latter ones were also used in battle.
The skull of these helmets sported bronze decorations and decorative “wigs”, usually arranged in braids.
