Aspis – Hoplite shield

– inner face color: if you ordered monochrome, please indicate whether you prefer red or blue.
– Porpax placement: please indicate whether you prefer it centrally or asymmetrically (see gallery); if asymmetrically, please send us the measurement from the inside of your elbow to the middle of your palm.
– Do you want decorative handcrafted wool tassels? Please clearly indicate whether you prefer them in red or blue. There is no additional charge.

The hoplite shields (aspis in Greek or clipeus in Latin) by Res Bellica, are made by alternating poplar  slats. The slatted technique is most probably documented by the famous Olpe Chigi. This is currently the oldest known representation of an hoplitic phalanx. 

Wood covered in linen, external side finished with gesso (mixture of glue and plaster as a preparation for decoration, documented by finds), brass accessories.

NB: with “painted”, we mean with a proper decoration, and not just the application of a layer of monochrome paint.
NB: the interior can be painted red or blue. Tell us in the notes of your order.
